Eating in Penang (Georgetown), Malaysia…

April 29th, 2011.
This guy was mastering the wok with his fried Turnip Cake stir-fries. I got the Turnip cake with Seafood that is pictured below. This was one of many food stalls on Lorong Baru Street, just off of Jalan Macalister. This is a good place to try many things, mostly with Chinese influences. Quite lively from lunch until late.

Stir fried turnip cake with seafood, fried egg, and bean sprouts. Nice iced coffee to go with it.
Can you say Chinese Malaysian Tapas?

Street food in Georgetown. Lots of options here, with many “asian-con-fusion” cuisine. Good stuff!

I can smell those Durians from here dude! Durians, which are one of those “you love ‘em, or you hate ‘em” foods, are all over the place in Malaysia. They have a very pungent smell, akin to some funky rotting fruit B.O. The flavor is sweet, can be a little tangy, the smell very strong, and its quite unique. Some people say its a custardy banana flavor. That plus a stinky toilet.
One of my favorite things in S.E. Asia has been durian ice cream… Perhaps this is also a better way for people who have not had it, to give it a try.
Panang has more durian vendors than I have seen in most places. And this is a great place to get some that is already cut out of the spiky shell. Most vendors here have all the different grades of durian (yes, there are quality grades for the stuff), and you can buy a little snack side package ready to eat.
Just be careful where you take the stuff. There are lots of signs in many places forbidding durians. I’m not sure what the punishment is, but perhaps its a big fine or death….Its that stinky!
